Book Review: Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross

Divine Rivals

Synopsis

When two young rival journalists find love through a magical connection, they must face the depths of hell, in a war among gods, to seal their fate forever.

After centuries of sleep, the gods are warring again. But eighteen-year-old Iris Winnow just wants to hold her family together. Her mother is suffering from addiction and her brother is missing from the front lines. Her best bet is to win the columnist promotion at the Oath Gazette.

To combat her worries, Iris writes letters to her brother and slips them beneath her wardrobe door, where they vanish—into the hands of Roman Kitt, her cold and handsome rival at the paper. When he anonymously writes Iris back, the two of them forge a connection that will follow Iris all the way to the front lines of battle: for her brother, the fate of mankind, and love.

Shadow and Bone meets Lore in Rebecca Ross’s Divine Rivals, an epic enemies-to-lovers fantasy novel filled with hope and heartbreak, and the unparalleled power of love.

Divine Rivals Review

Divine Rivals surpassed all my expectations, and I couldn’t be happier! This book was one of my most anticipated reads of 2023, and it delivered on every level.

The writing was like a lush garden, blooming with beauty and hope. The historical elements were masterfully woven into the story, and the hints of fantasy worldbuilding added a touch of magic that left me wanting more. Ross did a fantastic job setting up the plot, and the payoffs in the second half of the book were just perfect.

Despite being a tale of war and grief, Divine Rivals felt surprisingly comforting. Maybe it was the way the story was crafted or the heartwarming resilience of the characters, but even amidst death and destruction, there was a sense of hope that shone through the darkness.

I was completely engrossed, unable to put the book down. And let me tell you, the ending? It hit me like a tidal wave of emotions. I was all in for the romance between Iris and Kitt – it developed at a perfect pace, and their chemistry was undeniable. The side characters were just as well-developed, making me care deeply for this found family they created.

I could talk about this book endlessly, but words won’t do it justice. It was simply amazing, and I adored every single page. Heartbreaking, lovely, my heart is desperate for more!
